The Customer

The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham has recently been rebuilt by Balfour Beatty nearby leaving a large 1930s building behind.

The Background

The project as a whole was so big and there were so many members of staff on site that a dedicated canteen was needed. Birmingham Signs Now branch Glen’s mother worked in the canteen and regularly chatted to one of the Balfour Beatty team who made an introduction. Via Balfour Beatty, Signs Now became the suppliers of the signs for the old hospital building.

Before Work Began

When the new hospital opened a number of departments were moved into the old building and over a period of a couple of years it became very confusing as it had the old signs for the new departments. The hospital made the decision to replace the signage scheme for the old building. They set up a committee to review this matter and for over a year Glen attended committee meetings to provide advice on the proposed new signage. By the end of 2013 the hospital had chosen the new scheme and Signs Now was commissioned to do the work.

The Work

Over a period of 4 weeks we made and installed hundreds of new signs around the whole of the old hospital, as well as removing a lot of the old misleading signs.

Whilst putting the signs up, the hospital loaned us a room in the hospital where we could print, make and store old signs ready for disposal.

Directional and wayfinding signs were fitted. Everything from door signs to complicated directional signs to various departments. Great care had to be taken to ensure that our work didn’t interfere with the smooth running of the hospital.

The Result

The hospital were extremely happy with the result, which has made a lot of difference to staff, patients and visitors. If they need to change any of the signs at a later date, the hospital have been provided with a template to use on their own printers so that they can change the removable inserts as and when required, rather than replacing the whole sign. This sustainable solution will save the hospital money in years to come.

Testimonial:

“I have always found working with Signs Now a very enjoyable experience. With a very knowledgeable, helpful and reliable team on hand it made the results of unenviable tasks, enviable! Many teams now want to have their own signs created!”
